How to build Bruder RC models

The following article was inspired by a meeting with a youtuber and modeler who is involved in converting Bruder models into RC models. This means that he can convert regular models into RC (Radio Controlled Model) models. And since the models he rebuilds and the videos he makes with them intrigued us, we decided to ask some interesting questions.

How long does it take to completely convert a classic model to RC?

Our work, which consists in making videos for youtube, has led us to this activity. Since we want to continuously improve our "hands-free" shots, this conversion of models to RC was a natural choice. I want to emphasize right from the start that neither I nor my co-workers are modelers, we started practically from scratch and it took some time to develop and improve.

The rebuild time depends on the difficulty of the models and the amount of functions that each model has to perform. An example is the Bruder 3000 series tractor, which is required to go forward and turn: this conversion takes approximately 20 hours. If we want to have working lights and beacons, or to work out other details, then the time increases considerably.

Which conversion was the most challenging for you?

With every new model we set higher and higher demands on functionality and build quality, so in a way it is challenging to rebuild every model.

What does it take to do a rebuild like this?

To give you an example, I'll give you the tractor again: the simplest version of the rebuild requires three servo motors (two for propulsion, one for turning), a controller, batteries, a transmitter with receivers and wheel weights.

Which RC model are you most proud of?

Almost always the last one. At the moment it's the Volvo A60H, which we used different wheels for. The viewers watching our videos like the overall rebuild of this model; we've had nothing but positive feedback from them, and that motivates us to take on more challenges.

What are you most looking forward to this year's new products and their rebuilds?

Well this year's new products we are not really excited about, but most of all the snow roller, which we are not sure if we will rebuild, we are rather grinding our teeth on one of the trucks.

Do you use original parts or do you have to make them to measure?

Initially we used off-the-shelf parts, but over time we've started to make some of them ourselves out of aluminium. We are currently trying to develop an all-aluminium chassis for the 3000 series tractors.

How many models have you rebuilt?

Seven tractors - Massey Ferguson, McCormick, New Holland, Claas Axion, Deutz, Fendt, John Deere, and three trucks - Mercedes, Man and Volvo.

And this is what it looks like:

Thank you for the interview, we wish you much success with your next model remakes and also many happy viewers who follow your activities on YouTube.
