Male giraffes are one of the tallest land animals in the world and can grow up to six metres tall. Their long necks can measure up to two and a half metres, yet like humans they have only seven cervical vertebrae. Giraffes also impress with their unusually long tongue, which can measure up to 50 centimetres long and is protected from the sun by its dark colouring. Males fight each other with powerful head-butts to the neck of their opponents and often rest standing up in the wild.
