American Paint Horse foals have beautiful markings at birth that are typical of the breed. These horses are mottled individuals of the Quarter Horse breed. Previously, however, only solid-coloured animals could be entered in the studbook. However, American Quarter Horses became so popular that they were later recognised as a separate breed. They officially became one in 1965.
